Taxpayers will continue filing this year’s income tax returns under the Income-tax Act, 1961, despite the new law coming into force.

Many taxpayers are wondering whether this year’s Income Tax Return (ITR) should be filed under the new Income-tax Act, 2025. The answer is no. Although the new law came into effect on April 1, 2026, the current ITR filing is for income earned before that date. This means taxpayers must continue to file their returns under the Income-tax Act, 1961. Tax calculations, deductions, exemptions, and other rules will remain the same for this year’s return. The new Income-tax Act will apply only to income earned from April 1, 2026, onward. Experts advise taxpayers to use the correct rules while filing to avoid mistakes or delays in processing their returns.
