Will More Ethanol Really Make Petrol Cheaper? Former HPCL Chief Says No

Former Hindustan Petroleum (HPCL) Chairman M.K. Surana has challenged the belief that blending more ethanol with petrol automatically reduces fuel prices. He explained that ethanol currently costs around ₹56.71–₹71 per litre, while the ex-refinery price of petrol is about ₹53 per litre, making ethanol more expensive for oil marketing companies (OMCs). According to Surana, ethanol blending should not be viewed as a way to make petrol cheaper. Instead, he said it acts as a strategic safeguard, helping India reduce dependence on imported crude oil and improve energy security. While ethanol offers long-term benefits, he believes consumers should not expect immediate reductions in petrol prices.
