RBI May Introduce ₹25,000 Relief for Digital Fraud Victims Under New Protection Framework

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) is preparing a new customer protection framework that could provide compensation of up to ₹25,000 to eligible victims of small-value digital banking frauds. Expected to take effect from January 1, 2027, the proposal aims to strengthen consumer confidence in digital payments and online banking. Along with the compensation framework, RBI is working closely with banks to improve fraud detection systems, enhance transaction monitoring, and strengthen cybersecurity measures. The initiative is designed to reduce financial losses caused by digital fraud while making India’s digital banking ecosystem safer and more secure for customers.
